Yes Boys and Girls, all you Coffee Lovers out there, it’s True, Coffee is Good for You. Ye-Ha! Don’t you just love it. You might have heard from time-to-time that coffee is not good for you, bad for your health. Not So, but just the opposite, Coffee is Good for you. Coffee is High in Antioxidants, which can protect against damaged cells and reduce your risk of chronic disease including Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Strokes.

Now this is really good news, Great News in fact, the prevention and reduced risk of getting Heart Disease, Diabetes, and Stoke is major, and anything any sane person should be ecstatic and rejoice over, “I am.” Coffee can help prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson Disease. Awesome!

Just remember, moderation is the key, too much coffee can cause nausea, jitters, and a rapid heart beat. It is safe to drink up to 5 cups a day, if you start getting over 8 cups you may have problems and adverse side affects. So remember, enjoy your coffee, you can love it, but stay moderate and it will love you back. As for me, I just love and adore my morning coffee. I usually have a second cup in the late afternoon, but hardly ever after 4 PM and I’m finished for the day, until my next glorious morning cup to start another day, my Coffee, in the Cafe, the newspaper and I’m set, Buon Giorno!

Gotta have my coffee at the Cafe. There is not much in life that pleases me more drinking a nice hot tasty Cup of Joe in the warm welcoming invirons of a nice cafe. And I don’t mean Starbucks. Yes I can have my coffee at home each day, and save quite a lot of money. Yes i could have it at home and instead of spending about $1,600 a year or $16,000 every 10 Years on the stuff, I’d just spend about $120 a year or $1200 in ten instead of that 16 Grand. Yes I could put a whopping $15,000 in my pockets every ten years or so if I wasn’t so extravagant in my daily coffee habit, but it juts wouldn’t be the same, I wouldn’t be in a cafe which I love so dearly. I’d be at home alone with my coffee and no one else around. I’d have my coffee but I wouldn’t have people nor the surroundings of a nice cafe like one of my favorites of all, the former Caffe Dante in New York’s Greenwich Village where I had my coffee ( Cappuccino, Espresso, Caffe Latte) nearly everyday for 30 years.

You see it’s not just about the coffee but about being around other people and the community and conviviality of this thing called the cafe, a place to gather and be among like-minded people, those who life the cafe life. I could just go there and burry myself in a book, do some writing, or converse with a friend, the waitress, or someone new who I just met, “you see I’m at a cafe,” and this is what you do, you read, you write, sip your coffee, you relax, that’s the essence of any good cafe, and I’ve been to many. I’ve been to Caffe Florian in Venice, Duex Maggot and Flore along with many more in Paris, to Greco in Rome, Gambrinus in Napoli, Biela in Buenas Aires, du Monde in New Orleans, Caravelle in Macau, and many more.

You haven’t been to Sorrento if you haven’t gone to Bar Fauno. On a recent trip my cousin Tony and I had brekfast every day at Bar Fauno, and we might be found there at the end of the evening for a nightcap before retiring for the evening, as well as having a couple Apertivo’s during our stay.

You can get whatever you want at Bar Fauno, including; simply and Espresso or Cappuccino, a snack such as a Panino (Sandwich), Pizza, Gelato, or a whole complete meal. If you are staying at a hotel nearby, you’re sure to go to Bar Fauno a number of times during your stay. I highly recommend this, one of the World’s Great Cafes.”

The neighborhood where Sylvester Stallone was born, and where author Mario Puzzo wrote the Best Selling Novel “The Godfather” as well as the screenplay to the movie.

Manganaro’s Grosseria Italiana, commonly referred to as Manganaro’s, was an Italian market and deli on Ninth Avenue in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It opened in 1893 and operated for 119 years, helping to introduce the hero sandwich to Americans. The family closed the business and put the property up for sale in 2012.

The business was founded in 1893 by Ernest Petrucci as a wine and spirits store, Petrucci’s Wines & Brandies, that also sold groceries. Its location at 488 Ninth Avenue near 37th Street was on a stretch of the avenue that remained lined with exotic food stores for decades. After the enactment of Prohibition in the U.S. in 1919, Petrucci’s nephew James Manganaro, an immigrant from Naples, took over the store in the 1920s and changed the name; in 1927 he was able to buy the building. Manganaro may have invented the hero sandwich, and played a role in introducing it to Americans.

On his death in 1953, Manganaro’s passed to his brother Louis and sister Nina Manganaro Dell’Orto and their spouses; in 1955, with a publicity agent’s help, they invented the six-foot “Hero-Boy” sandwich, which was successful enough for one of Dell’Orto’s four sons to go on the original version of the TV quiz show I’ve Got a Secret, and for the family to open a sandwich shop next door at 492–494 Ninth Avenue the following year, while continuing to operate a deli and lunch counter in the rear of the grocery store.

In 1962, Louis Manganaro retired and two of his four nephews took over the grocery store and the other two the sandwich shop, Manganaro’s Hero-Boy, and the businesses were separated.

Sal Dell’Orto, who bought out his brother’s half ownership of the grocery store, and James Dell’Orto, who bought out his brother’s half ownership of the sandwich shop, fell out over rights to the “Manganaro’s Hero-Boy” name, trademarked by the sandwich shop in 1969, and advertising for party sandwich telephone hotlines, which led to two separate court cases. The business’ neon sign installed in the early 1930s, which became blinking in the 1960s, was turned off in 2000 so that Manganaro’s Hero-Boy could not benefit from it.The grocery store was repeatedly found at fault over the hotline and was ordered to pay damages to the sandwich shop, and the financial drain plus waning popularity, some of it due to the declining neighborhood, led to the decision to sell the building and close. This was first announced early in 2011, but the building was withdrawn from the market; the business then closed in late February 2012.

Anthony Bourdain featured the store, on the episode title “Disappering Manhattan” on No Reservations TV Show.

Lanza’s was an Italian restaurant in the East Village, Manhattan. It was opened in 1904 by Sicilian immigrant Michael Lanza in a tenement built in 1871. Lanza was rumored to have been a chef for Victor Emmanuel III of Italy. They closed in 2015. Eater reported it officially closed in 2017 after seizure by a marshal for non-payment of taxes. It is also said to have closed in 2016. The former restaurant’s murals, stained glass, and sign were retained by Joe and Pat’s, a pizzeria that opened at the location in 2018.

They were known to be a favorite of Lucky Luciano, Carmine “Lilo” Galante and Joseph “Socks” Lanza.

The WONDER WHEEL

The Wonder Wheel is a 150-foot-tall (46 m) eccentric Ferris wheel at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park at Coney Island in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The wheel is located on a plot bounded by West 12th Street to the west, Bowery Street to the north, Luna Park to the east, and the Riegelmann Boardwalk to the south. As with other eccentric Ferris wheels, some of the Wonder Wheel’s passenger cabins are not fixed directly to the rim of the wheel, but instead slide along winding sets of rails between the hub and the rim.

Built in 1920 as one of several Ferris wheels on Coney Island, the Wonder Wheel was designed by Charles Hermann and operated by Herman J. Garms Sr. and his son Fred for six decades. Despite the subsequent economic decline of Coney Island, the Wonder Wheel continued to operate each summer through the 20th century. In 1983, Herman Garms’s son Fred sold the ride to the Vourderis family, who restored the attraction and continue to run the wheel as of 2023. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Wonder Wheel as an official New York City landmark in 1989, and minor modifications were subsequently made to the attraction.

HISTORY

At the time of the Wonder Wheel’s construction, Coney Island was one of the largest amusement areas in the United States. The first Ferris wheel in Coney Island was built for nearby Steeplechase Park in 1894 and was erroneously billed as “The World’s Largest”. Several variations of the Ferris wheel were erected in the neighborhood in the 1900s and 1910s. The Wonder Wheel was unusual in that only one-third of its 24 cars were stationary, while the other two-thirds rolled on tracks within the wheel itself.

The Wonder Wheel was designed by Charles Hermann as an improvement on G.W.G. Ferris’s giant wheel, and it was built for Herman J. Garms Sr. between 1918 and 1920 by the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company. Coney Island landowner William J. Ward provided the land for the Wonder Wheel’s construction. Garms, who had no formal financial experience, sold stock to family, other Coney Island business holders, and steelworkers. Hermann sold all his shares in the wheel to raise money for construction and operation. Alfred (Fred) Garms, Herman Garms’s son, recalled that his father employed anyone who was willing to help erect the ride, teaching them how to construct the wheel. After the local ironworkers’ union heard about the project, they attempted to force the workers to join the union. The elder Garms named all of the workers as stockholders of the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company, preventing them from being forced to unionize.

The wheel first opened on Memorial Day in 1920. Hermann originally called it the “Dip-the-Dip”, promising to combine in his new invention “the thrill of a scenic railway, the fun of a Ferris wheel, and the excitement of the Chute-the-Chutes”. To help with the Wonder Wheel’s upkeep, the Garms family lived under the Wonder Wheel during the summers. With the success of the Wonder Wheel, the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company hoped to build more “wonder wheels” on the East Coast of the United States by the mid-1920s. Fred Garms worked on the ride as a ticket operator during the summer in the 1920s, when he was a child. By the time Fred had graduated high school in the early 1930s, he worked on the ride year-round, maintaining it.

After the ride’s construction cost had been paid off, Herman Garms bought out most of the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company’s stockholders, then reduced the size of the corporation to a small number of people.
