The Flag:

Johns’ first use of the flag motif was the result of a dream the artist had in 1954 when he was 24 years old. Flag was exhibited in Johns’ first one-man show at Leo Castelli’s gallery in 1958 and is now located at MoMA in New York. Since that time, Johns has created more than 100 flags in various media, in a variety of sizes, as a single flag or in multiples, and depicted it in black & white, greys, in oranges and greens and in the traditional red, white and blue.

“… the flag seems special. He returns to it again and again as a musician returns to a favorite theme or set of chords, a poet to a particular meter, or as Rembrandt did to his own ageing physiognomy.”

A notoriously enigmatic artist, Johns has remained tight-lipped regarding any possible socio-political associations with his repeated depictions of flags, making any such interpretation the responsibility of the viewer. While the United States flag is a powerfully loaded symbol in the collective American consciousness and around the world, Johns’ intentions in creating these works are non-symbolic. Instead, he is concerned with their formal stylistic structure, “Because what’s interesting to me is the fact that it isn’t designed, but taken. It’s not mine.”2  As something “the mind already knows,” the motif of the flag provided Johns with a ready-made composition and allowed Johns to create meaning through other avenues, such as the physicality of his surfaces, in his process of making marks and in his choice of medium.

AMERICAN FLAG

The painting of a flag is always about a flag, but it is no more about a flag than about a brushstroke, or about the physicality of paint.

The MONA LISA

by LEONARDO DaVINCI
The MONA LISA
The Mona Lisa is a World-Renowned portrait painting created by Italian Renaissance master Leonardo DaVinci .  Painted on a poplar wood panel between 1503 and 1519, it depicts a woman widely believed to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florentine silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo. Today, the masterpiece is permanently housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, where it hangs behind temperature-controlled, bulletproof glass.

  • The Sitter: Her Italian title, La Gioconda (and French La Joconde), translates to “the jocund one” or “happy”—a playful pun on her married surname, Giocondo.
  • The Enigmatic Smile: Leonardo utilized his revolutionary sfumato technique—applying ultra-thin, smoky layers of oil glaze to create imperceptible transitions between shadow and light. This makes her expression look dynamic, appearing to change or disappear depending on the angle of your gaze.
  • Groundbreaking Composition: Leonardo pushed art forward by adopting a stable, pyramid-shaped, three-quarter length pose. Unlike typical stiff, profile portraits of Renaissance women, she looks directly back at the viewer with an unprecedented air of self-assurance.
  • The Landscape: The background features a wild, imaginary landscape of jagged mountains, winding roads, and misty water elements that seem to organically blend into the curves of her hair and clothing.

  • LEONARDO DaVINCI

  • Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was was the ultimate ItalianRenaissance polymath, widely regarded as one of the most diversely talented individuals to have ever lived. While his enduring global fame initially rested on his masterful brushwork, he seamlessly bridged the worlds of art, science, and engineering. Driven by an insatiable curiosity—what he called saper vedere (“knowing how to see”)—he treated every natural phenomenon as an object of rigorous study.
    Masterpieces of Art
Though fewer than 20 of his paintings survive due to constant technical experimentation and chronic procrastination, they remain milestones in Western culture.
    • Mona Lisa: Housed in the Louvre Museum, it is the world’s most famous, visited, and parodied portrait, celebrated for its enigmatic smile and masterly sfumato shading technique.
    • The Last Supper: This massive mural in Milan captures the intense psychological drama immediately after Jesus announces a betrayal, pioneering dynamic perspective and emotional depth.
    • Vitruvian Man: An iconic ink drawing that perfectly blends the human anatomy with mathematical proportion, symbolizing the Renaissance humanist ideal.

    Editorial Reviews :

Review :Great Recipes & Stories of Italian-America …. I didn’t know what to expect before I loaded this on to my Kindle and started reading. The premise of the book is a set of Italian recipes with each one accompanied by a story. This is the first of its kind that I’ve ever read or even heard of, so I thought I’d give it a chance and wasn’t disappointed after finishing it a few days ago.

Daniel does a great job of creating the recipes and making sure that each one feels authentic and taste wonderful. All of the stories with each recipe is also well done and does a great job of connecting the food to the story. It’s hard to figure out which one is more enjoyable. The story side or the recipe side of this novel, but I had to chose it would be the recipe side of the novel as the recipes are truly great and highlight Italian cuisine. If you’re looking for a great cook book to give you some great Italian dishes to try out all courses, with a few stories to read while your food is cooking, then this is definitely the book you’ve been looking for. As it does a splendid job of creating wonderful, quality meals..Buy This One …
